Data and machine learning engineer in Houston.

I lead data engineering at Enterprise Products Partners, where I've spent seven years building data platforms, ETL systems, and the quantitative machine learning framework our data scientists use to train and deploy trading models.

I've also taught AI and machine learning at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business, covering everything from foundational Python through neural networks, computer vision, and large language models.

Suunly™ Time

Solar timekeeping

  • A time system in which noon occurs when the sun is directly overhead, computed from your exact latitude and longitude rather than fixed time zones.
  • Applies the equation of time to correct for Earth's elliptical orbit. Each degree of longitude shifts the clock by four minutes, and no daylight saving adjustment is needed.

Data Engineer

Feb 2019 — Oct 2022

Enterprise Products Partners (Contract) · Houston, TX

  • Built applications to average and interpolate real-time temperature data from sensors in brazed aluminum heat exchangers, feeding multiple ETL pipelines used for data modeling, ad-hoc analysis, data historians, and BI dashboards.
  • Worked with the data science team to productionize data wrangling code in Python and operationalize Keras multilayer perceptron neural networks.
  • Implemented data flows connecting OSI Pi, MapR, InfluxDB, and PowerBI using Python, Scala, Spark, Drill, StreamSets, Kafka, and SQL.
  • Scheduled all ETL jobs and near-time applications on a containerized Airflow deployment, defining DAGs for most workflows.
  • Developed data-intensive applications with APIs and streaming data pipelines.
  • Assisted analysts and data scientists with query optimization and performance tuning.

Software Data Engineer

Apr 2017 — Feb 2019

Sanchez Oil and Gas · Houston, TX

  • Set up Airflow with PostgreSQL and Celery as the workflow scheduler, defining DAGs for many of our workflows.
  • Created and dockerized a solution ingesting SCADA data into a distributed JSON database (MapR-DB), produced to a real-time topic consumed by other applications.
  • Developed a real-time operational alert system consuming multiple topics and writing to a time-series database (InfluxDB), read by microservices that fired alerts on predefined conditions.
  • Built batch ETL services extracting public well data and Sanchez field data for the data science and operations teams.
  • Built an automation tool to ingest flowback emails in spreadsheet format, parsing and writing them to their corresponding SQL tables.
